Joachim III Frederick ruled Brandenburg for only four years, from 1598 until his death in 1608, making his thalers among the shorter-lived issues of the Hohenzollern margraves. He was the son of Elector John George and served as Archbishop of Magdeburg before inheriting Brandenburg — an unusual trajectory that left him governing a Lutheran territory despite his ecclesiastical past having been shaped by the competing pressures of the Reformation.
The 1602–1604 date range on this type reflects normal sequential die usage rather than any production interruption. KM#19 is a relatively scarce type by survival rate, as Brandenburg thalers of this period saw genuine commercial circulation across northern German trade networks.
