| Description de l’avers | Three armored half-length figures of the co-ruling dukes Georg III, Ludwig IV, and Christian are depicted facing the viewer, their long hair falling to their shoulders in the Baroque fashion of the period. The brothers are portrayed in close proximity, filling the field within a beaded inner circle, with a small imperial orb positioned at the top of the circle. Arabesque ornamental devices appear beneath the busts, enhancing the decorative Baroque composition. The encircling Latin legend, separated from the central design by the beaded border, identifies the three brothers by name. |

The 1656 thaler commemorates the joint rule of three Piast dukes — George III, Ludwig IV, and Christian — over the fragmented Silesian territories of Liegnitz and Brieg. The Piast line in Silesia was by this point a dynasty in terminal decline, ruling diminished enclaves under Habsburg suzerainty while the broader Silesian lands had been absorbed piecemeal since the Bohemian inheritance of 1526. George III died the following year, and Christian — the last male Piast of the Liegnitz-Brieg line — died in 1672, after which the duchy reverted directly to Habsburg control.
Three-portrait thalers of this type were struck in limited quantities and survive less frequently than single-ruler issues from the same mint.
