Franz von Dietrichstein served as Bishop of Olomouc from 1599 and became one of the most powerful Catholic figures in Moravia during the Counter-Reformation. His political influence peaked in the late 1620s following the Battle of White Mountain, when he led the forced re-Catholicization of Moravia with Habsburg backing — expelling Protestant nobles, confiscating estates, and consolidating enormous personal wealth in the process. This thaler was struck at the height of that power.
The two-year production window of 1629–1630 coincides with Dietrichstein's tenure as Governor of Moravia, a secular appointment that ran concurrently with his ecclesiastical role.
