Ferdinand II ruled Tyrol as an archduke from 1564 until his death in 1595, administering Upper Alsace as part of his Habsburgische Vorlande territories — the scattered Austrian holdings west of the Rhine that served as the dynasty's foothold in the empire's southwestern reaches. These thalers were struck at the Ensisheim mint, the principal facility for the Further Austrian lands, operating under conditions that made consistent die quality difficult across a run spanning more than a decade.
