Beschrijving keerzijde Displayed double-headed imperial eagle with spread wings, each head crowned, bearing on its breast a quartered shield of arms incorporating the Habsburg dynastic territories. The eagle is rendered with fine feather detail in the hammered style of the Klagenfurt mint. A beaded inner border frames the central device, surrounded by the circumferential Latin legend INF HISPA ARCHID CARINTIE DUX BVRG, citing Ferdinand's titles as Infante of Spain, Archduke of Austria, Duke of Carinthia, and Duke of Burgundy.

Aanvullende informatie

Ferdinand I struck these talers from Klagenfurt at a moment when he was simultaneously fighting the Ottoman advance into Central Europe and suppressing Protestant reform movements across his hereditary lands. The Klagenfurt mint operated under the authority of the Carinthian estates, which gave Ferdinand a degree of leverage over local silver revenues critical to financing both campaigns. The long production window — twenty years — reflects continuous demand rather than a single mint authorization.

Davenport 8021 encompasses several die marriages across the Markl sequence, and pieces from the earlier 1530s issues tend to show sharper workmanship before the dies degraded under prolonged use.
