Ferdinand I struck these talers from Klagenfurt at a moment when he was simultaneously fighting the Ottoman advance into Central Europe and suppressing Protestant reform movements across his hereditary lands. The Klagenfurt mint operated under the authority of the Carinthian estates, which gave Ferdinand a degree of leverage over local silver revenues critical to financing both campaigns. The long production window — twenty years — reflects continuous demand rather than a single mint authorization.
