Brunswick-Grubenhagen was among the smallest and most financially precarious of the Wolfenbüttel-era Hanoverian principalities, and by 1555 it was effectively a rump state governed by joint rule among four brothers — a dynastic arrangement born of inheritance law rather than political choice. The co-regency of Ernest III, John, Wolfgang, and Philip II produced a brief but distinct coinage window; the line died out in 1596 with Philip II, the last of the Grubenhagen Welfs, ending over three centuries of the cadet branch.
Welter 489 is among the more frequently cited varieties for this type, though surviving examples with full, unobscured mint signatures remain genuinely scarce given the principality's limited striking capacity.
