Obverse description Left-facing draped and uniformed bust of Duke Ernest I, depicted in military dress adorned with epaulettes and multiple orders and decorations on the chest, rendered in high relief. The effigy is truncated at the shoulder, with the date 1817 appearing in the exergue below the bust. The encircling legend reads ERNST HERZOG ZU SACHSEN COBURG UND SAALFELD, distributed around the periphery of the field.

Reverse description Central shield bearing the quartered arms of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, displaying the traditional Saxon barry with a diagonal crancelin, surmounted by a ducal crown of ornate design with arched frame and pearled border. Decorative scrollwork flourishes flank the shield on either side. The upper legend FÜR GOTT UND VATERLAND arcs around the top of the field, while the lower legend ZEHN EINE FEINE MARK, denoting the fineness standard of ten marks to the fine mark, curves along the lower periphery.
