Reuss-Greiz was one of the smallest sovereign states in the German Confederation — by the 1850s its population barely exceeded 40,000. The Ältere Linie (Elder Line) designation distinguishes this issuing authority from the Jüngere Linie branch of the Reuss family, which governed the neighboring principality of Reuss-Schleiz-Gera under a separate administration. Both lines followed the unusual Reuss naming convention in which every male of the dynasty was christened Heinrich, differentiated only by number.
Otto Henning A.G. in Greiz handled production locally, which was practical given the note's purely domestic function. Currency of this scale rarely traveled far. Most examples that survived did so in private hoards rather than through formal banking redemption.
