The central escutcheon incorporates the arms of the Electorate of Trier and the House of Saxony. Mint-master initials C and M appear in the lower field on either side of the shield. Clemens Wenzeslaus of Saxony, the last Archbishop-Elector of Trier, struck this thaler just as French Revolutionary forces were advancing on the Rhineland. He had already fled his residence at Ehrenbreitstein by 1794, and Trier itself fell to French troops that same year. The archbishopric was formally dissolved in 1803 under the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss. This coin was minted under a sovereign who no longer controlled his own territory — issued from an institution that had fewer than nine years left to exist.
