| Beschrijving voorzijde | Draped bust of Clemens Wenceslaus of Saxony, Archbishop-Elector of Trier, facing right, wearing ecclesiastical vestments with a decorative cross pectoral visible at the chest. The hair is shown in the powdered wig style typical of the late 18th century, tied at the nape. A circular Latin legend runs along the entire periphery, separated from the portrait by a plain inner field. The portrait is rendered in a detailed neoclassical engraving style characteristic of late Holy Roman Empire ecclesiastical coinage. |

| Beschrijving keerzijde | Elaborate quartered coat of arms of the Archbishop-Elector of Trier, surmounted by an electoral bonnet and flanked by the cross of the Teutonic Order, with supporters and mantling on either side. The central escutcheon incorporates the arms of the Electorate of Trier and the House of Saxony. Mint-master initials C and M appear in the lower field on either side of the shield. The date is encoded within the chronogram of the surrounding Latin legend, with the fineness designation X. EINE MARK FEIN inscribed in the lower portion of the field beneath the shield. |

Clemens Wenzeslaus of Saxony, the last Archbishop-Elector of Trier, struck this thaler just as French Revolutionary forces were advancing on the Rhineland. He had already fled his residence at Ehrenbreitstein by 1794, and Trier itself fell to French troops that same year. The archbishopric was formally dissolved in 1803 under the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss. This coin was minted under a sovereign who no longer controlled his own territory — issued from an institution that had fewer than nine years left to exist.
