Charles Eugene ruled Württemberg for over half a century, and by 1781 his finances were in chronic disorder — decades of lavish court spending, a standing army maintained largely to hire out as mercenaries, and the construction of Ludwigsburg and Solitude palaces had left the duchy perpetually indebted. The Estates had fought him bitterly in court for years, culminating in the Imperial guarantee of their constitutional rights in 1770.
KM#441 is one of the later thaler issues from his long reign, struck at the Stuttgart mint under continued Holy Roman Empire monetary conventions established by the Reichsmünzfuss.
