The shield is set within an ornate cartouche flanked on the left by an olive branch and on the right by a palm frond, both tied at the base with a ribbon bow above a decorative star or order badge. The date 1781 is divided to either side of the crown. Charles Eugene ruled Württemberg for over half a century, and by 1781 his finances were in chronic disorder — decades of lavish court spending, a standing army maintained largely to hire out as mercenaries, and the construction of Ludwigsburg and Solitude palaces had left the duchy perpetually indebted. The Estates had fought him bitterly in court for years, culminating in the Imperial guarantee of their constitutional rights in 1770.
KM#441 is one of the later thaler issues from his long reign, struck at the Stuttgart mint under continued Holy Roman Empire monetary conventions established by the Reichsmünzfuss.
