Bernhard Gustav of Baden-Durlach served as Coadjutor of Fulda from 1671 before succeeding as Prince-Abbot — a secular prince of the Holy Roman Empire wielding both ecclesiastical and temporal authority. The abbey's right to strike thalers was a jealously maintained privilege, and this issue dates to the early years of his administration, a period when Fulda was still recovering economically from the devastations of the Thirty Years' War, which had ended just over two decades prior.
