Ákos Barcsai became Prince of Transylvania in 1658 under direct Ottoman pressure, installed after the catastrophic Polish campaigns of György Rákóczi II left the principality militarily broken and tribute-delinquent to the Porte. His reign lasted barely two years. János Kemény, his rival, had him strangled in 1661 — making coinage struck in his name exceptionally short-series by any measure.
The 1660 date places this thaler in his final year of rule, minted as Ottoman and Transylvanian political factions were already maneuvering against him.
