| Obverse description | Central device depicts the arms of Regensburg — a shield charged with two crossed keys — set within an elaborate Baroque cartouche of acanthus scrollwork and flanked by a laurel branch to the left. Surmounting the shield is a displayed eagle perched atop an orb and sceptre, with wings spread and head turned to the right, holding a laurel sprig in its beak. The date 1766 appears in the lower field below the shield. The circular legend runs along the milled border in two segments reading MON. REIP. to the left and RATISPON. to the right. |

The encircling legend, separated by mullets, reads IOSEPHVS II. D. G. ROM. IMP. SEMP. AVG. B. F., identifying the subject as Joseph II, by the Grace of God, Holy Roman Emperor, Forever August. The portrait is executed in the high Baroque manner with strongly modelled relief and fine detail in the hair and armour. |
