The circumferential Latin legend, reading SIXTVS V PONT MAX A I, encircles the design, identifying the pontiff as Supreme Pontiff in the first year of his reign. Pellets serve as word separators throughout the legend. The coin exhibits the characteristic irregular flan and bold relief typical of late sixteenth-century Roman hammered coinage. |
