The figure is rendered in the classical allegorical manner characteristic of late sixteenth-century papal coinage. The exergual area bears the mint name ROMA, and the surrounding legend NVNQUAM DEFICIET — meaning 'It shall never fail' — wraps around the upper and lateral periphery of the flan, referencing the steadfast faith of Rome. |
