The saint holds a vessillo (heraldic standard or gonfalon) in his right hand and a downward-pointing sword in his left hand, emblematic of his martyrdom. The composition is characteristic of Italian Renaissance devotional coinage, with the figure rendered in bold relief against a plain field. The surrounding Latin legend identifies the saint as a martyr. |

Masserano was a tiny feudal holding in Piedmont that punched well above its weight in coin production during the early sixteenth century, exploiting the legal ambiguities of imperial investiture to strike silver of a quality and size normally reserved for major powers. The testone denomination itself was barely decades old when this issue appeared, having been pioneered in Milan under Galeazzo Maria Sforza in the 1470s.
Ludovico II and Pierluca I ruled jointly — a co-lordship arrangement that produced one of the more unusual joint-authority coinages in the Italian states series. MIR 682 is scarce in any condition, as Masserano's output was always limited by the scale of its mint.
