Desana was among the smallest lordships in the Po Valley — a pocket territory wedged between Vercelli and Casale whose rulers punched well above their weight in coin production. The Tizzoni of Desana held the right to strike silver by imperial grant, a privilege they exploited aggressively during the Italian Wars, when disrupted trade routes and collapsing larger monetary authorities created brief openings for minor lords to fill circulation gaps with their own issues.

Louis II ruled during one of the most violent and unsettled stretches of northern Italian political history, with French and Spanish forces repeatedly crossing Piedmont. Coins of this type are rare survivors; Desana's mint output was never large, and the county was absorbed into the Gonzaga sphere before mid-century.
