Additional information

Turkmenistan's 1993 coinage was among the first issued after independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, with the teňňe introduced as the national currency in November 1993 to replace the Russian ruble. The transition was abrupt — Turkmenistan was one of the last former Soviet republics to establish its own currency, and the initial coin series was struck under considerable logistical pressure.

These copper plated steel pieces were produced by the Kremlin's Monetny Dvor (Moscow Mint) under contract, a practical irony given the political circumstances of independence.
