Ratna Manikya I ruled Tripura in the mid-fifteenth century during a period of sustained conflict with Bengal, and his coinage reflects a kingdom actively asserting its independence against Sultanate pressure from the west. The Manikya dynasty, which took that dynastic name as a royal title around this period, produced a distinctive silver coinage that draws on both Hindu iconographic traditions and the broader Bengali monetary conventions of the era — a coinage that was emphatically local in character.
KM#278 is among the earlier attributed pieces in the Tripura series. The regnal dating system used by the Manikya rulers adds a layer of complexity to attribution that still generates disagreement among specialists working from Bengali and Tripuri primary sources.
