The field is divided by intersecting strokes of large, deeply incuse lettering in a square cartouche arrangement, characteristic of the late Gujarat sultanate coinage. The inscription, executed in a robust angular hand, carries the royal titles and name of Sultan Ghiyath al-Din Ahmad Shah III. The irregular flan edges are typical of hand-struck issues of this period, with the legend extending to the very rim. |

Ahmad Shah III came to the throne as a child and ruled under the effective control of court factions — his reign was defined less by his own governance than by the competing ambitions of the nobles who managed him. The Gujarat Sultanate was by this point in steep decline, caught between Mughal encroachment from the north and internal fragmentation that no single ruler proved capable of reversing.
Akbar formally annexed Gujarat in 1572, little more than a decade after this coinage ended.
