Firuz Shah Tughluq's reign saw a deliberate debasement of the silver tanka — a policy driven not by economic crisis but by a calculated effort to fund an unusually extensive programme of public works, including canals, hospitals, and rest houses across the sultanate. The billon composition of this issue reflects that fiscal calculus directly. Firuz was also notable among Delhi sultans for minting coins that recorded his regnal years, a practice that allows pieces like this to be dated with unusual precision within his 37-year rule.
