The anonymous silver tankas of the Malla period present one of the more persistent attribution puzzles in Nepalese numismatics. Type D4 within the RGV sequence falls during a stretch when the three Malla kingdoms — Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur — operated as rival city-states, each maintaining its own mint with deliberately ambiguous iconographic programs that complicate ruler attribution to this day.
The absence of a named issuer was not carelessness but policy: certain issues were intentionally struck without regal identification, likely to facilitate acceptance across competing kingdoms' markets.
