| Reverse description | The reverse is entirely occupied by a multi-line Arabic legend in bold thuluth script, arranged in horizontal registers across the field. The inscription proclaims the imperial titles of Mahmud II, identifying him as Sultan of the two lands and Khagan of the two seas, the Sultan son of the Sultan. The text is densely laid out, filling the flan to the beaded border that frames the entire design. The calligraphy is deeply struck and characteristic of the Ottoman epigraphic style employed at the Tunis Mint during the early nineteenth century. No figurative devices or mint marks appear on this face. |
