| Descrizione del dritto | The national coat of arms of Ecuador occupies the central field, depicting a condor with outstretched wings perched atop an oval shield charged with Mount Chimborazo, a steamship on a river, and the sun above the horizon; the shield is flanked by four flags and surmounted by a laurel branch on each side. The legend REPÚBLICA DEL ECUADOR curves along the upper periphery in raised Latin characters, while the fineness mark L.925 and weight 27 gr. appear in the lower left and lower right of the field respectively. The denomination UN SUCRE is inscribed along the lower rim. The entire design is struck to a brilliant proof finish with deeply mirrored fields contrasting against frosted relief elements. |

The Battle of Pichincha, fought on May 24, 1822, on the slopes of the Pichincha volcano above Quito, secured the independence of the Audiencia de Quito from Spanish rule. The engagement was led by Antonio José de Sucre, whose forces — including a notably international contingent of Venezuelan, Colombian, Peruvian, and Argentine troops — defeated Royalist General Melchor Aymerich in under three hours. Ecuador has commemorated May 24th as a national holiday ever since.
