1 Stuiver - Rudolph II

Nijmegen occupied an awkward position during these years — nominally under Habsburg authority while the Union of Utrecht was coalescing around it in 1579, the city did not formally join the Dutch revolt until 1591. These stuivers, struck in Rudolph II's name, belong to that uncomfortable middle period when the city still acknowledged imperial overlordship while its neighbors were choosing sides. Billon coinage of this type circulated heavily in the regional market economy and survives today mostly in well-worn condition.
