By the late 1790s, the VOC was already a dead institution in everything but paperwork — the company had been declared bankrupt in 1799 and was being wound down by the Batavian Republic. These stuivers were struck in the final years of that dissolution, making them among the last coinage issued under the VOC authority before the Dutch state absorbed its assets and territories entirely.
The copper fabric on late VOC issues is notoriously inconsistent, a consequence of supply chain disruptions during the French Revolutionary Wars cutting off reliable metal sources to the mints.
