Saint Eustatius, by the early nineteenth century, had changed hands so many times — Dutch, British, French, back again — that its circulating coinage was a chaotic mix of whatever happened to be on the island. The Cayenne stuiver, originally struck in French Guiana, was countermarked by the colonial authorities on Eustatius to legitimize its use locally, with the C12 and C13 punches corresponding to the years XII and XIII of the French Republican calendar.
The British occupied the island from 1810, complicating attribution of the later countermarks considerably.
