Obverse description Central field features the quartered coat of arms of Batenburg, consisting of a cross saltire in the upper quarter and a checkered pattern in the lower left quarter, supported by two rampant lions as shield supporters, the whole surmounted by a crested helm. The armorial device is rendered in the hammered style typical of early seventeenth-century Low Countries coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the shield in the outer field, reading MONETA · NOVA · ARGENT · D · BAT, denoting the coin as new silver money of Batenburg. The flan is irregular in shape, characteristic of hand-struck coinage of the period.
