Albert and Isabella received the Spanish Netherlands as a sovereign gift from Philip II in 1598, a transfer designed to make their rule appear independent while keeping the territories firmly within Habsburg strategic orbit. Tournai, deep in the contested southern provinces, continued minting under the new regime almost immediately.
