Gottfried III ruled Heinsberg during a period when the lower Rhine lordships were minting small silver sterlings in deliberate imitation of the Aachen pfennig tradition, competing for local commercial acceptance in a region saturated with competing ecclesiastical and secular coinages. The Heinsberg sterlings are documented by Menadier as a distinct, short-lived series tied specifically to Gottfried's tenure — no equivalent issues are attributed to his successors.
