Obverse description Facing bust of the young Prince Christian (later Christian IV), depicted as a child prince wearing an elaborate ruffled lace collar and richly embroidered costume, set within an oval cartouche adorned with foliate ornament. The effigy is rendered in a late Renaissance style characteristic of the Copenhagen Mint's hammered coinage of the period. A circular Latin legend surrounds the cartouche, reading CHRISTIANVS·4·D:G·PRI:ET:ELECT:REX·DAN:NO·Z, identifying the prince as heir-elect to the Danish and Norwegian thrones. The entire device is enclosed within a finely beaded inner border and a twisted rope outer border.

Reverse description The elaborately quartered royal arms of Denmark are depicted at centre, surmounted by a large crowned royal helmet with flowing mantling to either side, all within an oval cartouche. The multi-quartered shield displays the lions and hearts of Denmark, the lion of Norway, the three crowns of Sweden, and further heraldic charges of the Danish composite monarchy, with a smaller inescutcheon at the centre. The date 1590 is divided to either side of the crown above the helm. A circular Latin legend surrounds the composition reading REGNA·FIRMAT·PIETAS (Piety strengthens the realms), separated by decorative stops, all enclosed within a beaded inner border and a twisted rope outer border.
