Christian IV struck these large silver dalers during a period of aggressive Danish ambition in northern European trade and politics — ambition that would end badly in the Thirty Years' War. Denmark's intervention in 1625 proved catastrophic; by 1629 the Treaty of Lübeck had stripped Christian of his German territorial influence entirely. The dalers of this decade circulated against that backdrop of overreach and military humiliation.
The "Bust type I" designation distinguishes this from later portrait revisions made as the king aged. The oval provincial shields arrangement on the reverse reflects the administrative geography of the Danish realm at its greatest extent, before territorial losses to Sweden reshaped that cartography permanently.
