Obverse description The fifth definitive effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as designed by Jody Clark, faces right wearing the George IV State Diadem. The queen is shown in a mature, dignified portrait with the diadem rendered in fine detail above her brow. The legend, separated by a raised dot, encircles the effigy and includes the date. The designer's initials J.C. appear truncated below the portrait.

Reverse description The central field features Benedetto Pistrucci's celebrated high-relief depiction of Saint George, helmeted and in armour, astride a rearing horse to the right, thrusting a broken lance downward to slay the writhing dragon beneath the horse's hooves. The entire composition is enclosed within the encircling ribbon of the Garter, bearing the motto in raised Latin letters. The engraver's initials B.P. appear in the lower central field on the ground line. The milled border frames the design with fine radial graining.
