The somoni replaced the Tajik ruble in 2000 at a rate of 1000:1, a conversion necessitated by catastrophic inflation that had accumulated during the 1992–1997 civil war. By the time the new currency launched, the ruble had become so devalued that the 1-somoni note represented more purchasing power than entire bricks of its predecessor. The National Bank used the new series partly to symbolize post-war institutional rebuilding — the denomination name itself honors Ismoil Somoni, the 9th-century Samanid ruler claimed as a founding cultural figure of the Tajik nation.
The series ran across a notably long production window, and early versus late issues within the P#14 type show minor but detectable variations in print registration quality.
