Khan Tengri — "Lord of the Spirits" in Turkic — sits on the tripoint border of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and China, and was first summited in 1931 by a Ukrainian-led Soviet expedition. For decades the peak was misidentified as the highest point in the Tian Shan range until survey work confirmed that nearby Jengish Chokusu exceeded it. The Kyrgyz National Bank has issued a broader circulation commemorative series honoring the country's defining geography, of which this Som forms part.
