The exergual inscription CONOB, referencing the Constantinople mint and gold purity standard, is retained from the Byzantine prototype. The surrounding retrograde legend, read from right to left, is a debased rendering of the imperial Victory formula. The style is crude and angular, characteristic of barbarous imitations struck by uncertain Germanic tribes. |
