The Duchy of Spoleto occupied an uneasy middle ground in post-Lombard Italy — nominally under Lombard authority yet increasingly autonomous, its dukes occasionally striking gold in the name of the reigning Byzantine emperor as a political gesture rather than a statement of genuine allegiance. Issues in the name of Constans II from Spoleto are distinguished from Byzantine mint products by local symbols whose precise meaning remains contested among specialists. The Spoletan mint was irregular at best, which accounts for the considerable variation in fabric and execution found across surviving examples.
