Carl of Saxony held the dukedom of Courland and Semigallia as a Polish vassal, though his tenure was perpetually contested — he was expelled by Russian pressure in 1763, just one year after this solidus was struck. The small copper issues of his reign are accordingly scarce, produced in a window of fewer than two years before Catherine the Great effectively ended Courland's independence as a functioning ducal state by installing her favorite Ernst Johann von Biron.
