| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the crowned shield of Saluzzo, displaying the quartered arms of the marquisate surmounted by a marquis's crown. The initials F and S flank the shield on either side, identifying the issuer as Francesco di Saluzzo. A circular Latin legend runs along the coin's periphery, partially obscured by the irregular flan. The overall style is characteristic of Italian Renaissance hammered billon coinage, with bold if somewhat roughly struck devices. |

| Additional information |
Francesco di Saluzzo ruled the marquisate under near-constant French pressure, the territory functioning as a contested buffer between France and Savoy throughout his reign. The soldino was the workhorse denomination of northern Italian petty states — billon issues of this type circulated alongside a half-dozen competing coinages in the same markets, which explains the heavy wear typical of survivors. Francesco was eventually expelled by the French in 1537, effectively ending independent Saluzzese coinage for a generation.
