The Sokol ("Falcon") was not a coin but a token issued by the Czechoslovak Sokol Organization, a gymnastic and nationalist movement founded in Prague in 1862 that became deeply intertwined with Czech national identity under Habsburg rule. By 1920, with Czechoslovakia freshly independent following the collapse of Austria-Hungary, the Sokol movement had enormous political prestige — its membership ran into the hundreds of thousands, and its mass gymnastic rallies, the Sletys, functioned as de facto demonstrations of national cohesion. This brass piece dates to that first flush of sovereignty.
