Visby's mint operated under a special dispensation during Christian III's consolidation of Danish authority over the Baltic territories, with this issue struck during the turbulent early years of his reign — a reign that began only after a brutal civil war known as the Count's Feud, which left Denmark's monetary system fragmented and urgently in need of re-establishment. The Gotland mint had a complicated history of intermittent operation, and these skilling represent one of its last productive phases before the island's coinage was absorbed entirely into the Danish monetary framework.
