The Zurich Taler was never a circulation coin — it was struck as a shooting festival prize piece, awarded at cantonal and federal rifle matches that had been a fixture of Swiss civic life since the medieval period. The Freischiessen tradition made these talers semi-official: privately commissioned but struck at federal facilities, occupying an awkward legal space that Swiss authorities tolerated because the festivals themselves were constitutionally protected.
