| 表面の説明 | The central field displays the full coat of arms of the Republic of Kenya, featuring two rampant lions as supporters flanking a traditional Maasai shield quartered with a cockerel and spears, all above a scroll bearing the national motto HARAMBEE. The date is divided by the shield, with the left numeral to the lower left and the right numeral to the lower right of the arms. The legend REPUBLIC OF KENYA arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 1 ONE SHILLING is inscribed along the lower periphery. |

Kenya's shilling coinage of this period was issued under the Central Bank, established only in 1966 following the collapse of the East African Currency Board — a colonial monetary arrangement that had served Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania jointly since 1919. The breakup was driven partly by Tanzania's socialist economic policies under Nyerere, which made a shared currency politically untenable. Each successor state moved quickly to assert independent monetary institutions.
The KM#14 "with legend" designation distinguishes this type from an earlier variant, a distinction worth confirming against the specific piece in hand.
