Uganda's shilling coinage of the mid-1980s emerged from a period of acute economic instability following the successive disruptions of Idi Amin's expulsion and the Bush War that brought Yoweri Museveni to power in January 1986. The switch to nickel-plated steel for this denomination reflects the foreign exchange constraints that made cupronickel procurement difficult for the Bank of Uganda during this transitional period.
