| Obverse description | Crowned bust of King James I facing right, wearing robes with a ruffled collar, the crown depicted with elaborate fleurs-de-lis and arched detailing. The effigy is rendered in the characteristic flat, linear style of early seventeenth-century hammered coinage. The portrait is contained within an inner beaded circle, with the royal Latin legend distributed around the outer field. The legend reads IACOBVS D G ANG SCO FRA ET HIB REX, proclaiming James as King of England, Scotland, France and Ireland by the Grace of God. |
