James I inherited the Irish monetary system in a state of deliberate degradation — his predecessor Elizabeth I had flooded Ireland with base-metal coinage during the Nine Years' War to fund military operations cheaply, leaving the Irish currency deeply debased and distrusted. This shilling belongs to his first attempt to restore credibility, struck within months of his accession before the more comprehensive monetary reforms of his later Irish coinages.
The Spink 6512 attribution places it firmly in the transitional moment before Dublin's minting infrastructure was properly reorganized under the new reign.
