Reverse description Central design features a tall, slender palm tree with fully spread fronds rising from a ground of tropical foliage and flowers, its trunk bisecting the date 1936 placed in the mid-field on either side. Decorative scroll-and-tendril ornaments flank the date at the base of the palm. The legend BRITISH WEST AFRICA arcs across the upper periphery, while ONE SHILLING is inscribed along the lower periphery, all in bold upright Latin lettering. The composition, designed by George Kruger Gray, is enclosed within a plain inner border and an outer milled rim.
